Acura MDX and RDX Receive IIHS' Top Safety Pick For 2008

TORRANCE, Calif. - 11/15/2007
Acura MDX and RDX luxury SUVs earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2008 TOP SAFETY PICK Award, the IIHS' highest honor. The annual award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side, and rear crashes based on ratings in IIHS tests.
The TOP SAFETY PICK is earned by a small percentage of vehicles sold in America. In an effort to further improve safety, IIHS announced for 2008 that only vehicles with Electronic Stability Control, branded as Vehicle Stability Assist(tm) (VSA®) on Acura vehicles, and advanced head restraints will qualify for its top safety honor. VSA® helps drivers maintain control during emergency driving maneuvers when their vehicle might otherwise lose control.
Every Acura vehicle includes as standard equipment Vehicle Stability Assist(tm) along with a host of other standard safety equipment including dual-stage/dual-threshold front airbags with Occupant Position Detection System, automatic tensioning front seatbelts with load limiters, specially designed energy-absorbing front end architecture to enhance crash safety, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and Daytime Running Lights.
"Safety remains a paramount concern for all Acura vehicles," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales. "Occupant protection is at the forefront of every vehicle that Acura designs."
In addition to TOP SAFETY PICK awards for its SUVs, Acura's RL, TL, and TSX sedans all receive GOOD ratings in IIHS frontal offset tests. Further evidence highlighting Acura's outstanding safety are 5-Star ratings1 (the highest rating possible) for all its vehicles awarded from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) in governmental frontal offset crash tests.

SH AWD

SH-AWD

The closest anyone has come to reinventing the wheel: The groundbreaking Acura Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system. Fine-tuned for all Acura Vehicles, this exceptionally advanced all-wheel-drive technology helps you gain more traction in less-than-perfect conditions and the confidence to crave precision corners in every other condition.

SH-AWD is available on 2008 Model Year Acura RL, MDX and RDX.

1.During Straight-Line Acceleration:
The groundbreaking SH-AWD system offers dramatically enhanced traction, control and acceleration in all weather or loose road conditions. Accelerate and the system directs up to 40% of the engines torque to the rear wheels to, in turn, deliver full power to the ground.

2.During a Moderate Corner:
SH-AWD delivers a remarkably neutral steering feel as the rear wheels help generate cornering power. Electronic sensors monitor the speed and tightness of the turn, and automatically vary torque to the outside cornering wheel, resulting in enhanced stability and driver control.

3.During Acceleration Trough A Corner:
Here, the advanced SH-AWD technology stands alone. Like no other system, the outside cornering wheel gets up to 100% of the rear wheel torque and is accelerated to rotate 5% faster than the inside wheel, providing greater turning force and an incredibly stable cornering line.

4.During Straight-Line cruising:
SH-AWD sophisticated electronic controls automatically monitor road conditions and alternate torque from front to rear, as well as splitting rear wheel torque from left to right. The end result is a continuously smooth, stable ride in poor weather or road conditions
